Leadership Is Human. Not Mechanical.

Updated: Aug 11

I believe leadership is innately human. We lead people, not machines. And yet, so much of how we've been taught to lead asks us to treat people exactly like machines. Faster. Harder. Always producing. Always performing. Always overriding the very things that make us human.
SOFT is my answer to that. As a philosophy, it puts the human back into leadership.
It asks a different question. Not "how do I get more output from these people," but "how do I lead from a place that respects them?" There's a quiet but important difference between seeing your team as tools to hit a target and seeing them as people who are worthy in their own right. SOFT lives in that difference.
At its heart, SOFT is the practice of knowing, internally, that there is another way. A way that keeps people in their worth. That respects the person for being human, and therefore for being flawed. A way that stops resisting the messiness of being human and starts embracing it, because that messiness is not a problem to manage. It's the very thing that makes us creative, intuitive and alive. Here's what makes this urgent rather than just nice.
We have entered the AI age. More of our work is becoming automated, optimised and handed over to tools that operate with perfect efficiency and zero feeling. And in that world, something interesting happens. The distinctly human capacities, discernment, emotional intelligence, trust, connection, become more valuable, not less. The more our tools operate like machines, the more our leadership needs to be human.
This is the great irony of the moment we're in. Everyone is racing to become more efficient, more automated, more optimised. But the leaders who will matter most are the ones who go the other way. Who lean into the things a machine can never do. Who can read a room. Who can sense when someone is struggling before they say a word. Who can build the kind of trust that makes people want to give their best. You cannot automate that. You can only embody it.
For too long we've been taught to lead from pressure. To push through exhaustion. To hold it all together. To override our own signals in the name of success. SOFT is the invitation to stop leading from pressure and start leading from presence.
Presence is not softness as in weakness. It's softness as in attunement. It's being grounded enough, aware enough and connected enough that people feel safe around you. It's leading from alignment rather than adrenaline. And it turns out this isn't just kinder. It's more effective, more sustainable, and far more human.
This is only the beginning of the conversation. Over the coming weeks I'll be sharing more about what SOFT actually looks like in practice, the framework behind it, and how it can change not just the way you lead, but the way you experience leading.
For now, I'll leave you with this. The future of leadership will not be built by those who can override themselves the longest. It will be shaped by those brave enough to embrace what makes us human.
Business is human. The future of leadership is SOFT.
