What is SOFT Leadership?

For most of my career, I led the way I thought was the right way to lead. Fast. Decisive. Always on. Always pushing through the exhaustion, the doubt, the quiet signals from my body that something wasn't right. I built businesses, scaled teams, turned around companies in crisis. By every external measure, I was succeeding. But I was exhausted, and if I was honest, I was miserable.
The problem with how we lead
We inherited a model of leadership built on constant output. On overriding yourself in the name of performance. On the belief that the best leaders are the ones who push the hardest, rest the least, and show the fewest cracks. That model treats people like machines. But we are not machines.
We have instincts. We have energy that ebbs and flows. We have a need for rest, for connection, for work that actually means something. We have an inner knowing, call it intuition, call it gut feeling, call it the body's intelligence, that is often smarter than any strategy deck we have ever followed. When we override that, we don't just burn ourselves out. We burn out the people around us too.
For a long time, I refused to even use the word burnout. I told myself it was a state of mind. That it wouldn't happen to me. So I kept pushing through the stress, through the pressure others put on me, and the pressure I put on myself. Everyone was looking for direction, waiting for me to tell them what to do. I felt I had no choice. I felt I had something to prove, something to live up to. I felt I owed it to my team and their jobs.
But honestly, what they were asking for was not reasonable.
A different way
A few years ago, after a long season of leading in exactly that way, I stopped. Really stopped. And in the stillness that followed, something became clear. There is another way to lead. One that doesn't ask you to abandon yourself to be effective. One rooted not in pressure, but in presence.
I call it The SOFT Method. It's not about being weak. It is not about being passive. It is not about being nice. And it is certainly not about leading with less ambition. It is about leading with more awareness. More honesty. More of yourself, not less.
The SOFT Method
SOFT is a framework built from everything I have lived through as a leader: the wins, the mistakes, the burnout, and the hard lessons I would not trade.
It stands for four phases.
Sense. Before you lead anyone else, you learn to read yourself. Your body's signals. Your gut responses. The subtle knowing that arrives before your rational mind catches up. Sense is the practice of turning inward first, treating your inner intelligence as data, not noise.
Open. Leadership is not a solo performance. Open is the practice of making space for rest, for genuine connection, for the kind of presence that allows others to show up fully too. It is where trust is built, not just declared.
Flow. Flow is what happens when you stop leading against yourself. Clear boundaries. Aligned decisions. Moving from your own rhythm rather than everyone else's urgency. It is sustainable because it is honest.
Transform. This is where the inner shift becomes outer impact. When you lead from awareness and genuine connection, it multiplies. Through your team. Through your culture. Through the people who watch how you lead and quietly give themselves permission to lead the same way.
And then there is the Spiral: the recognition that this is not a linear process. You will return to these phases again and again, at different seasons of your life and leadership. Each time deeper. Each time more yourself.
Who this is for
SOFT Leadership is written from my lived experience of spending fifteen years navigating systems that were not built for me. But it is for anyone who has ever felt that the way they are expected to lead is costing them something essential.
It is for the leader who is tired of performing and ready to be present. For the one who senses there is another way, but hasn't yet had the language for it. For anyone who believes that leadership, at its best, is one of the most human things we can do.
Because the future of business is human. The future of leadership is SOFT.
This is the first in a series of posts exploring The SOFT Method. Next: Sense — the practice of leading from the inside out.
