THE SPIRAL: Why Leadership Is Not a Destination

This is the final article in a series introducing SOFT Leadership. If you missed the previous ones, start here: What is SOFT Leadership?
We live in a world that loves a straight line.
Set the goal. Follow the steps. Arrive at the outcome. Move on to the next one. It is a clean, satisfying story. And it is almost never how real growth actually works.
Real growth is not linear. It is spiral. You return to the same questions, the same edges, the same tender places — but each time from a different level of understanding. Each time with more of yourself available to meet them.
That is the Spiral. And it is the fifth element of SOFT Leadership.
What the Spiral actually is
The Spiral is not a phase you reach after Transform. It is the shape of the entire journey.
Sense, Open, Flow, Transform — and then you return. Not to the beginning, but deeper. To a more honest version of Sense. A more spacious version of Open. A more grounded version of Flow. A Transform that reaches further than the last one did.
In nature, nothing grows in a straight line. Seasons cycle. Tides move in and out. Trees do not shoot upward without also sending roots deeper. The spiral is one of the most ancient and universal shapes in existence — found in galaxies, in shells, in the structure of DNA, in the way storms move across the ocean. It is the geometry of growth.
We are part of that same pattern. And yet we have built leadership cultures that reward only the forward motion and treat every return as a setback. It is not a setback. It is a deepening.
What returning actually looks like
I have been through the SOFT spiral more times than I can count. In different businesses, different roles, different seasons of my life.
There were moments in my early career where I thought I had figured out how to lead. Where something clicked and I felt clear and capable and finally on solid ground. And then something would shift — a new challenge, a change in the business, a season of personal upheaval — and I would find myself back at Sense. Back at the beginning of the cycle.
For a long time, that felt like failure. Like I hadn't learnt enough, or held the lessons tightly enough, or grown past the old patterns the way I thought I had.
What I understand now is that returning is not the same as going backwards. Every time I came back to Sense, I came back with more information. More self-knowledge.
A slightly more honest read of my own signals. The question was the same. But I was different. And that difference changed everything.
That is what the Spiral does. It does not ask you to start over. It asks you to go deeper.
The wisdom that only comes with time
There are things you cannot learn the first time around.
You can know, intellectually, that rest is important. And still burn yourself out. You can understand the value of boundaries and still say yes when your body is saying no. You can believe in leading from presence and still find yourself performing under pressure.
This is not hypocrisy. It is being human. We integrate slowly. We need to live through something more than once before it becomes genuinely ours. Before it stops being a concept we agree with and starts being a truth we lead from.
The Spiral honours that. It does not ask you to be perfect. It asks you to keep returning. Each time with a little more clarity. Each time with new eyes.
I think of some of the most grounded, wise leaders I have encountered in my life.
None of them had it figured out all at once. What they had was a deep familiarity with their own patterns. A comfort with not knowing. A willingness to revisit, reconsider, go again. They were not more evolved than the rest of us. They were simply more willing to spiral.
Nothing is wasted
One of the things I find most comforting about the Spiral is this: nothing is wasted.
Not the burnout. Not the wrong decisions. Not the seasons where you felt completely off course, or the roles that ended in ways you didn't choose, or the years you spent leading in a way that cost you more than it should have.
All of it becomes material. All of it informs the next pass around the spiral. The hard seasons are not detours from the journey. They are the journey. They are what give your leadership depth, texture, and the kind of hard-won wisdom that cannot be learned from a book or a course or a framework.
It can only be lived. And then returned to. And lived again, differently.
Where to start
At the end of this series, I want to offer you not a checklist but a question.
What are you understanding now — about yourself, about how you lead, about what you actually want — that you could not have understood a year ago?
Sit with that. Let it show you how far you have already spiralled.
Because the journey is not behind you. It is continuing. Each cycle deeper. Each return more honest. Each pass around the spiral bringing you closer to the leader you actually are, rather than the one you were taught to be.
Business is human. And the future of leadership is SOFT.
